Made for Two Wheels
The zumo is made for extreme durability; it's vibration-tested, waterproof, and built with fuel-resistant plastics to withstand the elements. It's also intuitive, with a glove-friendly touch screen with left-handed controls that make it easy to operate. There's a bright, sunlight-readable, UV-resistant display that makes it easy to view, as well as a unique motorcycle console for trip information, including a fuel gauge to warn you when its time to fill up. The display measures 3.5 inches diagonally and features 320 x 240 pixel resolution.

Measuring 4.8 x 3.9 x 1.6-inches (WxHxD) and weighing just 10.6 ounces, the zumo is small enough to carry with you while you're off the bike. The high-sensitivity GPS receiver is powered by the SiRF Star chipset, which offers extreme accuracy, even when you're riding under dense foliage or between tall buildings. The unit also features Garmin Lock -- an advanced anti-theft feature that disables the unit from performing any functions until you type in a specific four-digit PIN or take the unit to a predetermined location.

The zumo comes with a motorcycle mount with universal mounting hardware so you can mount it anywhere. An automobile mount is also included, and it features an integrated speaker. Garmin also provides custom caps, which are available in a variety of colors, so you can reflect your style.

Navigate the Open Road
The zumo 550 comes ready to go right out of the box with preloaded City Navigator NT street maps and a hefty points of interest (POIs) database, including motels, restaurants, fuel, ATMs and more. Simply enter a destination, and the zumo takes you there with turn-by-turn voice directions that speak street names. In addition, zumo accepts customized points of interest such as school zones and safety cameras, and it also includes proximity alerts to warn of upcoming POIs. Plus, the unit is fully compatible with Garmin's Tour Guide feature, a free utility that allows you to build and upload a database of POIs that are encoded with photos and MP3 files. A rechargeable, removable lithium-ion battery that offers up to three hours of use is integrated into the zumo for trip planning or use on foot. In addition, the zumo even accepts electronic maps, making it the ultimate off-road navigator.

Hands-Free Calls and Wireless Voice Prompts
With the zumo's Bluetooth wireless technology, you can talk on the phone safely without removing your gloves or helmet. Connect the device to your Bluetooth-enabled headset/helmet and cell phone to make and receive hands-free calls. You can even make phone calls to POIs through the zumo's Bluetooth interface. In addition, The zumo transmits navigation voice prompts to your headset so you can listen wirelessly.

Traffic, Weather, and Radio
With optional XM subscriptions and an XM antenna, you can check the weather, move ahead of traffic and listen to the radio when you travel with the zumo. As an alternative, the zumo can receive optional TMC traffic alerts (in select cities) when used with a compatible traffic receiver. Simply press a button on the screen, and the zumo recalculates your route to avoid traffic tie-ups.

Route Planning, Sharing, and Entertainment
The zumo makes it easy to plan your next trip and share routes with your riding buddies. Plan trips on your computer before you start. Search for food and fuel stops and local attractions. Then, transfer your route to your zumo and go.

At the end of the day, share your favorite places and rides with other zumo riders, and review your travels in Google Earth. SD card expansion makes it easy for storage and route sharing, and you can download routes to share with your riding buddies. You can also load MP3s onto the unit so you can enjoy music while you're riding. Plus, a JPEG picture viewer lets you share photos of your adventures with friends and family.

Exactly What Was Needed and Wanted

The Zumo 550 GPS has worked like a charm for me, right out of the box. Its controls and manipulations are intuitive and a cinch to master. Instalation is easy, and straight forward. The mounts on both my car and motorcycle and all hardware and instructions, came with the unit in the well-designed box.

I have little interest or talent for technical puzzle- solving or complicated wrenching, so this product was a friendly, knowledgeable passenger from the first use. On the second use, it got me to a destination when I had absolutely no idea where I was. This is the first and only ground-based GPS I have used, but I can't imagine a better one. I am thankful and pleased that I got this particular iteration of the GPS.

A must for the serious Rider

Pros: easy to use even with my cold weather gloves on!
Cons: I don't have enough vacation time to ride my bike on more trips

"I received my Zumo 550 in the mail on the day I was leaving for a five day motorcycle trip. I did not have time to read the instructions, only time to mount it and go! The unit was so simple to use I was an expert by the end of the day. I traveled 1900 total miles on this trip and the Zumo 550 became an invaluable tool! I used it in the mountains of North Carolina always expecting the unit to Not know where I was or loose satilites but that Never happened. The built in blooth tooth linked my cell phone and bluetooth headset and I was able to hear directions clearly! With the extra mount for my car, I am able to quickly move the unit from bike to car effortlessly. I look forward to adding the XM antenna to an already feature packed unit. I loaded my 2GB SD card and listened to my favorite music and also loaded pictures of the trip on the unit as well. Don't bother looking at any other units for your motorcycle, THIS IS IT!!"

As for you folks upset about having to use a headset to hear the directions, how were you expecting to hear anything from a speaker on a GPS at highway speeds? Why would you not want the blue tooth headset to link your phone and listen to mp3 music as well? Anyway, everyone has an opinion.

too bad garmin is crooked

watch-out, the xm on this is not bluetooth, in other-words if you want to hear the xm on this you will need to connect to your base with wires.

I called garmin and the "slow" tech says that xm signal is too big for bluetooth. As if I'm asking our "slow" friends to stream bluetooth. according to garmin tech its not possible.

well what you have to do is get the jabra A120s which then you connect to your base's audio out and then you pair the jabra A120s to your bluetooth stereo headset, and now you can hear everything in bluetooth including xm.

I guess what can be done with the jabra bluetooth adapter ($45) stupid garmin could not do with their $1000 product.

other then that everything else is great, ofcourse now the problem is that the jabra A120s is for music and not phone calls so your zumo can show you your calls but you can't talk to them.
$1000 product and you have to not only spend more money but you will have to chose between phone or xm if you want to stay wireless.

thx for nothing garmin, I thought garmin was a respectable company :(

gave it 4 stars because aside from the xm I have no complains.

but I give garmin themselves 0 zero stars for false advertisement/mis-advertisment.

Garmin Zumo 550

As Advertized, works out of the box. Simple to navigate by touch screen all it's features. I wish they told me that I needed an MP3 style cord to go between the motorcycle mount and the motorcycle radio to receive voice (Not sold by Garmin). I love this thing!I spoke to many others before my purchase and they say Garmin is the best I agree. I thought the idea of riding my motorcycle was to get lost.... now I'm never lost.
